Indians were the original inhabitants of Manhattan Island. Italian Giovani da Verrazzano was the first European explorer to reach New York Bay in 1524. The area was not mapped until 1609 by the Englishman Henry Hudson.
The "Big Apple" is now the largest city in the United States of America and therefore also one of the most important cities in the world. This vibrant city, with approximately 9.5 million inhabitants, is visited by more than 57 million people every year.
